Many years ago, I was commissioned to paint the Old Testament account of Ruth and Naomi. When I begin any painting, I research, pray, and fast. Three years later I was blessed with the concept for Whither Thou Goest. Ruth and Naomi faced overwhelming challenges, which become deeply emblematic of our own challenges. And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

During the time of Kressin's book (), this northeastern European area belonged to the powerful German-speaking state of Prussia. (Since , most of Pomerania has been part of Poland.) Whither Thou Goest starts with its main character, Maria Treptow, enjoying a secure and mostly carefree childhood in her family-oriented, church. "Whither Goest Thou?" "Whither Thou Goest, I Will Go" This is only true if you happen to believe that the Bible is a book that is more meaningful than other books.

Ruth says, “Entreat me not to leave thee or to return from following after thee; for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.” (Ruth ) How could Naomi resist a love like that. So Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem. Both of them are now widows and they are poor. Whither Thou Goest is the seventh book in Anna Belfrage's series featuring time traveler Alexandra Lind and her seventeenth-century husband, Matthew Graham.
